Welcome to Garton

Garton Elementary is nestled in an east side neighborhood between Guthrie and Hull Avenue.  It is located at 2820 E. 24th Street in Des Moines, IA.  Garton and Adams Elementary schools successfully merged in 2005.

Garton has a total population of 615 students.  There are sixteen different languages represented at Garton.  The population is made up of 70% of Hispanic/Latino, African American, Asian, American Indian, Pacific Islander or two or more other races.  We currently have 88% of our population eligible for free & reduced lunches, which in turn impacts additional title support for reading and math in the building.

Garton is a Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) school.  We focus on being respectful, responsible and caring Wildcats.  We focus on building positive relationships by incorporating team building activities, teaching clear expectations for both structured and non-structured areas, and mentoring.

Garton has focused on excellence through embedded professional development focused on research based strategies, including Early Literacy Foundation Skills, Marzano Instructional Framework, Writing, gradual release of responsibility and active engagement strategies to provide our students the best educational experience possible.

We have high expectations for our students and staff.  Everyone has a job at Garton in order for our school to be successful! Students are taught they need to come to school to be a learner.  They know and understand if students are here to be learners then our teachers are able to do their job.  The administration team both teaches and ensures teaching and learning occurs daily.

Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat!!!
